Healing with Hula
Experience Calmness, Well Being & Joy
the Indigenous Dance and Ancient Storytelling of Hawai'i
If you have just gone through a breakup or loss, going through a career change, recovering from depression or already thriving and would love to experience and receive more flow, confidence and synchronicity in your life or just have a desire to dance, come join us for fun and sisterhood through Healing with Hula.
To the physical eye, Hula is just a dance form.
To the soul, it is a venue to vibrate joy and wellbeing.
Metaphorically, it is a platform upon which one's life is guided to be Pono - being in alignment with what is true. It is a process of planting seeds of love. It is a way of learning how to nourish these precious seeds so they can grow and blossom.
- Kumu Kaipo
To an observer, Healing with Hula classes appear to have a format similar to most dance classes - Warm ups, reviewing basic steps, learning choreography, and learning how to move the body along with the music or chant.
In taking a closer look, it is much more. Hula is:
- an energy dance, similar to the Chinese Tai Chi, in how it releases muscular tension and energic blocks in the body through the slow and flowing movements
- a therapeutic dance that can help you to both restore your heart, mind and spirit from the stresses of the day, and gently support women in healing their relationship with their body from physical and emotional trauma.
- a way to have fun in exploring your creative expression with this ancient form of Storytelling through movement
- a spiritual practice and moving meditation, being the physical embodiment of prayer and poetry that places the values of community above all else
A woman may arrive for a Healing with Hula class feeling fatigued, or may be a bit frazzled, or may be a bit annoyed with something or someone. By the time the class ends, she will have evolved into a better feeling place, experiencing calmness, peace and a sense of “sisterhood” with her other hula sisters.
“I love how hula makes me feel....so relaxed and at peace....It builds body confidence without changing a thing about you...I feel indescribably beautiful in a wholesome, natural way."
Hula is something that needs to be experienced in order to be appreciated. Reading or hearing words about it … is just that…words. Experiencing it brings that feeling of joy and well being.
"The Hawaiian Hula is grounding and balancing to the mind and body - many physical "aches and pain" have been greatly reduced. My self esteem has increased....Hula is supportive of curvaceous femininity. I have made peace with my body, finally. My health and body image are improving day by day."
"The Hawaiian legacy, connecting to the sacred through story and human form, is beauty in motion. What a unique gift in being able to share such interpretation of Love through and with the body."
It is also important to know what a unique and wonderful opportunity we have to experience this Gift of Hula from the Hawaiian people. Hula is one of the most important parts of their culture. It is their ancient Storytelling through Movement and Sacred Dance that is unique to the Hawaiian islands. With not having a written language until the 1800’s, when the missionaries arrived, Hula became the living history of the Hawaiian people. The Hawaiian Culture is called “The Way of the Heart”, with family and community including their ancestry, their connection to each other, and to the earth, the air and down to each grain of sand.
Hula is called the "Language of the Heart", in how it shares their myths and legends, stories and values through songs, chants and music accompanied by dance with descriptive hand gestures and rhythmic movement of feet and hips. Because of that, it is also called “the Heartbeat of the Hawaiian people” and the glue that holds their culture together. And in sharing it now with non-Hawaiians, it is giving us an opportunity to understand, honor and respect who the Hawaiians are as the indigenous, original people of Hawai’i, while also giving us the opportunity to have Hula to help us to create a better relationship with our Heart, Mind and Spirit, the sacred land and the human family.
“The hula is Hawai’i. The hula is the history of our country. The hula is a story itself if it’s done right. And the hula, to me, is the foundation of life. It teaches us how to live, how to be. It is the ability to create one’s inner feelings and no one else’s.” - Uncle George Na’ope, Kumu Hula
Hula touches hearts as well as minds, and it fills the soul and pleases the eyes. It is loved worldwide because it is a celebration of beauty, of people, of the land; of nature with its winds, soft rains, waterfalls and surf. Learning Hula is great fun; and when you acquire even just a little skill, it allows you to fully experience your connection with your own Inner Essence.
No former dance experience is necessary. The movements are graceful
- It it is structured in a way that enhances the sense of balance and harmony.
- It is a low-impact exercise, wonderful especially for the hips, legs, knees and arms.
- It helps develop coordination, flexibility, self-confidence and good health
- Connects you to your inner essence to express your creative expression.
- Anyone can do hula
The key elements addressed are:
- The physical need for exercise (movement) in a fun mode.
- The ongoing quest to keep the brain/mind active.
- The soul’s hunger to grow and blossom in a nurturing and safe environment.

"Hula is a gift to be shared because it can do so much to heal, cheer, and cleanse the soul. Hula is for the soul. There are many people who can derive happiness and joy from the hula, just as they derive joy and happiness from other activities. But hula is more….It can free the mind and unburden the soul, allowing for the creativity of expression that can be highly spiritual in nature." -Auntie Aloha Dalire, Kumu Hula
